Maria Barletta was born in 1963 in Ostuni, Italy, near Brindisi. In 1985 she started work as a freelance news photographer for the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno. She moved to Milan in 1987, where she began working on the city’s events and news with the Milanese agency Fotogramma. In 1994 she joined the photo agency, Contrasto, covering national news and politics, such as the Italian national “Tangentopoli” corruption scandal. Her photographs have been published in national and international magazines and newspapers. Since 1999, she has been working as an independent freelance photographer, covering stories and making portraits for magazines and newspaperes, as well as working on personal projects and cooperating with NGOs. Her major photographic projects include stories on maternity and women’s health in Italy, as well as in Chad and Yemen; scholarship among pigmies in the Republic of Central Africa; essays on India and Malawi; and social integration of minorities in Italy. In cooperation with other photographers she has published two books: “Oltre Famiglia” on the evolving italian family, and “Donne Raccontano Donne” containing essays by twenty women photographers reporting the stories of twenty women and their professional lives. Ms. Barletta’s activities are now based in Boston and Milan. |
